What sedation options do you offer?

We offer both twilight sedation, which puts you into a calm and drowsy state, and general anesthesia, which renders you completely unconscious. If you feel anxious even before you leave home, we can give you a prescription ahead of time, for an anti-anxiety medication which you can take at home on the morning of your appointment with us.

What is twilight sedation?

Twilight or conscious sedation is a relaxed, drowsy state of mind. We use nitrous oxide, administering it via a mask that you breathe through. You will remain conscious during the procedure, and able to respond to requests, but will feel calm and relaxed. We’ll also give you a local anesthetic, so you’ll be pain-free throughout.

What is general anesthesia?

General anesthesia is full sedation. That is, during general anesthesia procedures, you will be completely unconscious and will be closely monitored by a qualified anesthesiologist until you regain consciousness.

Will I still feel pain?

We offer local anesthesia , so you should feel no pain. We also offer post-visit painkillers if you have undergone extensive work that might cause pain later.

What if I'm nervous before I even come in?

Many of our patients suffer anxiety before they even reach our offices. If you have that degree of anxiety, we can give you a prescription for an anti-anxiety medication to take before you leave home to come here.

Are these procedures safe?

The sedatives we use are well-established to be safe. Very rarely a person might have an allergic reaction to a drug, but we’re well equipped to handle that situation and would do so promptly. It’s very unlikely to happen.

For all of our sleep dentistry our own anesthesiologist is present to administer the drug, to monitor your vital signs, and general to ensure your safety until you’re fully conscious again and able to go home. We do recommend that you have someone drive you home.
